Today I want to talk about the belief that one of our main roles as a leader of any team in any organisation, is to remove the barriers to success for individuals in our team and the team as a whole. In other words, we have a responsibility to remove obstacles.
Now why is that?
For me it comes from belief number 2 (see here) that we lead people and not things. Therefore when become the leader of a team, we become the leader of those people and this means that instead of being in charge, we are actually responsible for taking care of the people that are “in our charge”.
And in order for those people to thrive, in order for them to be able to achieve the goals that have been set and agreed, they need to get over obstacles that may be in the way. Some of them will be their own to overcome, but some are for us as the leader to remove.
These obstacles can come in all shapes and sizes:
Other people in the organisation who need to know what your team is working on so that they play their part or get out of their way.
Providing the budget or investment for what’s needed when it’s needed
Identifying and plugging skills gaps
And so much more…
What are the obstacles that you see right now that you can remove for people in your team? Let me know in the comments below. I promise that I read every single one. Or email me at sonia@soniagavira.com

PS. After leading teams of all shapes and sizes for over 20 years (and that’s just professionally! See my leadership story here), what I’ve come to realise is that behind the skills that you need to learn are a set of beliefs that will enable you to not only learn the skills but also practice them, learn from your experience and keep on improving. In this series, I’m going to share with you what those beliefs are and how they are going to make you so much more successful with any team you lead.
The first one of these is The Law of Positive Intent and you can find that here. The second one is the belief that we lead people not things, find it here
