A new model for our world today and tomorrow
You’ve heard me say it before – I see a crisis of leadership in our world, in our communities and in our organisations. The leadership journey embarked on always seems to be the same. And if you haven’t heard me say it before, where have you been?! Make sure you subscribe to the SG Insider so you don’t miss out.
Working with leaders at all stages of their leadership journey, I hear so many who look to a model of leadership that is no longer valid. So many of us choose our leaders for qualities which on their own are limiting. We attach gender to those qualities. We attach a cultural, political and economic structure to those qualities. And yet our world is constantly evolving.
Many choose to call it a VUCA world – volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous. These words invoke a need to control, a sort of fight that we are in. What if we chose to call our world vibrant, unchartered, creative and astounding instead? What would those words invoke?
I do see signs of hope, I see world leaders today who are both strong and powerful AND empathetic and kind. I see leaders who don’t just talk about sustainability and diversity but make them central to their work. Leaders who don’t just talk about poverty, hunger and unemployment, but who make decisions to measure wealth and success differently in order to directly tackle those challenges.
But there are not enough. They are the exception rather than the rule, and my belief is that if we are to thrive as human beings, we need to change the role model.
I’ve set out to find ways to nurture this new model by talking about it, writing about it, creating a community of leaders (and we all lead, but that’s for another day!) that will support each other in finding the courage to have conversations that will change the role model. Support each other in becoming those role models. And that’s just for now…
