Although work-life balance has been a regular topic in my coaching practice, it seems to have taken on a life of its own recently with more people wanting to explore it and figure out a way to achieve it.
Coming out of a global pandemic, a change in priorities, stepping into a world that is increasingly uncertain, the war in Ukraine, inflation, global economic crisis – all of this and I’m sure you could add to it too, has put this on the top of many people’s agenda.
Despite this, so many of us still struggle.
Here are some reasons why:
- The words work-life balance encourage us to see this as work on one side, life on the other, and trying to keep them in perfect balance – ie. the same ‘amount’ on one side and the other. But this is not possible or helpful. Work is part of life and what we need in life changes as we go through different stages. Some people have started to call this a ‘work-life blend. I like to simply call it ‘my healthy life and I see it as a delicious meal that I prepare in terms of what I need to be happy, healthy, and well at this stage of my life.

- We may be assigning too much importance to work and not enough importance to other things in our lives. How important are relationships, health, fun, etc? If you are feeling out of balance right now, what is it that you need more of and how can you make it more important?
- Some of us spend too much time doing things that we get very little satisfaction from at work. There’s a clichė that says “If you do what you love you will never work a day in your life”. Yes, it is a clichė, but there is some truth in it too. In my work with motivation using a great tool called motivational maps, we find that about 80% of the people who take the self-assessment, describe “having a purpose and making a difference” as one of their top motivators. So ask yourself, are you working at something that has a purpose? Does it align with your purpose? Do you make a difference in some way? If yes and you still have a sense that you are out of balance, how can you shift your priorities in some way to make room for more? If not, then what would be purposeful for you and how can you spend more time doing this?
